A Prayer for Owen Meany

I had to skip the political/religious sections but the characters are great and that ending! As an alternative "The World According to Garp". I'd like to be able to read more John Irving but just cannot get into The Cider House Rules or A Son of A Circus. A Prayer for Own Meany has some wonderful characters. The book follows them as they grow and relationships develop, change etc. The way the story sets up for the ending is extraordinary.
(they are short so both books only really count as one). Not everyone's cup of tea but has a very interesting an unusual view on life. Writing looks dark but very much a thick underlying seam of humour. Of the two I'd probably suggest you start with Survivor.
Set in post Glastnost Russia. Fantastic characters, amazing insight on the life of a fixer smoothing the wheels of his Moscow-mafia controlled 'business'. A dark undercurrent of threatened yet rarely revealed stylish violence keeping you on the edge. And great set peices of humour. I couldn't put it down!
Stunning. Each chapter is a story in its own right but each has a connection with one (or more) of the others. Amazing variety of writing styles and subjects. Beautiflly written.
Lowbrow but laugh out loud funny. Should be complulsary reading. Overall story is set around the Holocaust but book takes the form of letters between the author and a guide he uses for travel in the Ukraine and extracts from a book that Jonathan is writing. Extraordinary imagination, very funny but will also make you weep. Get it for Christmas. NOW!

I was so taken by this book as I never thought I'd enjoy it but I fell in love with the descriptive writing style, the ambience, the love story ... everything so much fun, so simply written, lovely characters - and exciting, too ... this is the recent one I read that had me in a range of emotional states - well worth a read, I think. Poignant and thought-provoking ...
another recent read of mine that I just didn't want to end - just a beautiful, beautiful and simply-written love story have to put this here - always thought this would be a 'boy' book, but not at all. One of my favourites

The Vic Brown Trilogy (cheated it's really three books) Stan Barstow
A good story, true to life, with believable characters. Shows well how a person changes as they grow up.
Can't remember why I loved this, I just did. I will read it again soon and let you know.

Brilliant characters, again loved it, but don't know why.

We all know the story, which is good in itself. I love the style of this, the way he talks to me.
Funny, sad, and again, believable characters. Great book, the only thing that let it down for me was the ending. But not enough to take it out of this list.
I found this fascinating. A look at an arranged marriage in the Asian community, and how it feels to be an immigrant living in the East End of London.
