This was the most beautifully written book I have ever read

I could identify with the main character and it had the strange effect of depressing me and making me laugh at the same time??!

Just a great story, every girls dream to be pursued by a Mr. Darcy type!
One of my son's schoolmates brought this book round one day as he was reading it for his A level literature. I happened to have a quick look.... I didn't get out of the chair for the rest of the day! It totally gripped me. It's like an upmarket whodunnit, very well written and atmospheric. This is a short children's book that I read to all three of my children when they were young. It's written in rhyme and is just a wonderful story about a monster who is afraid of humans. The illustrations are great too. Sadly, our copy fell to bits because we read it so often!

Lord of the Rings / The Silmarillion
My all-time favourite. In the shadow of the recent film adaptations, it's easy to forget that the bult of Tolkein's work is actually published in "The Silmarillion" He wanted to create a truly English legend such as other cultures possess. A professor of linguistics, he imbued his work with more than just a story, but a whole culture to co along with it. This gives his work depth other authors have been trying to achive ever since.
